Peptides are the most misunderstood ingredient in modern skincare. Here is what they are, what they can honestly do, and how to use them so the results compound.

Start with the protein

Skin is, structurally, a protein architecture. Collagen gives it tensile strength, elastin gives it recoil, and the two together decide whether a face looks cushioned or drawn. Proteins are long chains of amino acids. When you cut those chains into short fragments — anywhere from two to roughly fifty amino acids — you have a peptide.

That definition matters, because a peptide is not a foreign compound the skin must be persuaded to tolerate. It is a fragment of the skin's own vocabulary. Applied topically, certain peptide sequences are read by cells as information rather than as decoration.

Why fragments are read as instructions

When collagen breaks down — from time, sun, mechanical stress — it leaves behind characteristic fragments. Fibroblasts, the cells that manufacture collagen, monitor for those fragments. Their presence is interpreted as evidence of damage, and the cell responds by increasing matrix synthesis.

Signal peptides exploit that feedback loop. Palmitoyl tripeptide-1 and palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7, the pairing most often described as Matrixyl 3000, mimic those breakdown fragments closely enough that fibroblasts respond as if repair were required. The result is upregulated collagen and glycosaminoglycan production without injury.

Other families work differently. Carrier peptides escort trace minerals such as copper into the skin, where they act as cofactors for enzymes involved in repair. Neurotransmitter-inhibiting peptides — acetyl hexapeptide-8 among them — soften the micro-contractions that etch expression lines. Enzyme-inhibiting peptides slow the breakdown side of the equation instead of pushing the build side.

What peptides will and will not do

Peptides are cumulative, not corrective. They work at the pace of the dermis, which remodels over months rather than days. Clinical work on signal peptides typically reports measurable change in fine lines and firmness across eight to twelve weeks of consistent twice-daily use. Anyone promising a visible structural result in a week is describing hydration, not remodelling.

What peptides offer in exchange for that patience is tolerance. Unlike retinoids and acids, they do not work by provoking a controlled irritation, which is why they suit reactive skin, rosacea-prone skin, pregnancy, and anyone who has abandoned actives after a bad experience. They can be used morning and night, indefinitely, without a tolerance-building ramp.

They are also collaborative. Peptides pair well with niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, ceramides and antioxidants. The one genuine caution is formulation, not conflict: very low pH environments — a fresh layer of a strong direct acid — are not where you want a delicate peptide sequence to land. Separate them by time of day and the question disappears.

How to layer a peptide serum

Apply to clean, slightly damp skin, before anything heavier. A serum is a delivery vehicle; it needs contact with skin, not with the film left by an oil or balm. Two to three drops, pressed rather than dragged, across the face and down the neck.

Follow with moisturiser to seal. In the morning, finish with sun protection — not because peptides create sensitivity, but because ultraviolet exposure dismantles collagen faster than any topical can rebuild it. Photoprotection is what makes the peptide investment hold.

Then leave it alone. The most common reason a peptide routine appears not to work is that it was replaced at week five by something newer.

The eye area is a different organ

The skin around the eye is roughly a third to a half as thick as the skin on the cheek. It carries very few sebaceous glands, so it cannot self-moisturise. It sits over a dense capillary bed with thin walls. And it moves — blinking, squinting, smiling — an estimated fifteen to twenty thousand times a day.

That combination explains why the eye area ages first and behaves unlike anywhere else on the face. A rich facial cream applied there is usually too occlusive and too heavy; a facial serum is often too concentrated. The area genuinely warrants a formula written for its own physiology.

What puffiness actually is

Morning puffiness is fluid. Overnight, lying flat, lymphatic drainage slows and interstitial fluid pools in the loose tissue beneath the eye. Salt, alcohol, poor sleep and allergy all amplify it by increasing capillary permeability — the vessels leak more fluid into the surrounding tissue than the lymphatics clear.

Dark circles are frequently the same story seen through thin skin. Blood pooling in dilated capillaries reads as blue-violet shadow through a translucent layer. That is a vascular presentation, not a pigment one, and no amount of brightening actives will resolve it.

The distinction matters because it tells you what an ingredient must do: strengthen the capillary wall, reduce leakage, and support drainage.

Escin, and why it is precise

Escin is a saponin complex extracted from the seed of the horse chestnut, Aesculus hippocastanum. It has a long clinical history in venous medicine, where it is used to reduce oedema by decreasing capillary permeability and improving venous tone.

Applied to the eye area, that mechanism translates directly. Escin helps tighten the junctions between endothelial cells so less fluid escapes into the tissue, and supports the microcirculation that clears what has already pooled. It is also anti-inflammatory, which addresses the low-grade irritation that keeps the area looking tired.

In a well-built eye formula escin does not work alone. Caffeine offers a short-term vasoconstrictive effect. Peptides address the crepey texture that develops as the thin dermis loses density. Humectants and ceramides supply the moisture the area cannot produce for itself.

Application is half the formula

Use very little — a grain of rice for both eyes. Warm it briefly between the fingertips so it does not drag.

Apply with the ring finger, which is the weakest and least likely to pull. Tap rather than rub, moving along the orbital bone — the bony rim you can feel — not along the lash line. Product migrates upward and inward on its own with warmth and blinking; placing it too close to the lash line is the usual cause of morning irritation and milia.

Include the outer corner and the upper lid to the brow bone. Morning and night, consistently. The eye area responds well to routine and poorly to intensity.

Marine ingredients are usually sold on romance. This one is sold on mechanism — an extracellular polysaccharide from a lagoon bacterium, produced by fermentation.

An organism that lives under pressure

Alteromonas is a genus of marine bacteria. The strain used in skincare was isolated from the lagoon waters of French Polynesia, an environment of intense ultraviolet exposure, high salinity and fluctuating temperature.

Organisms in that environment survive by manufacturing protective compounds. Alteromonas secretes an exopolysaccharide — a large sugar molecule released outside the cell — that forms a hydrated, protective envelope around it. That molecule, not the bacterium, is the skincare ingredient.

What fermentation actually contributes

Fermentation has become a marketing word, so it is worth being precise. Here it is a manufacturing method: the bacterium is cultured in a controlled bioreactor, it produces the exopolysaccharide as part of normal metabolism, and the molecule is then isolated and purified.

This matters for three reasons. It is reproducible — the same strain under the same conditions yields the same molecule, batch after batch, unlike a plant extract that varies with harvest. It requires no marine harvesting, so nothing is taken from the reef. And it delivers a molecule of defined size and structure rather than an uncharacterised botanical soup.

How it behaves on skin

The polysaccharide is strongly hygroscopic; it binds water and holds it in a gel-like film across the surface, which supports hydration without occlusion — an important distinction for a daytime formula that must sit under sun protection and makeup.

More interesting is its behaviour on inflammation. Published work on this class of marine exopolysaccharide reports reduced release of pro-inflammatory mediators and improved recovery in skin stressed by ultraviolet exposure or irritants. In practice it reads as calm: less reactive flushing, less of the tight sting that follows a strong active the night before.

It also supports the barrier indirectly. A skin surface that is not fighting low-grade inflammation retains lipids better and loses less water through the day.

Where it belongs in a routine

Daytime, primarily. The point of a morning formula is defence: hydration that lasts, protection from environmental stress, and a base that does not interfere with sun protection.

It is a natural partner for niacinamide and antioxidants, and a useful counterweight in a routine that includes retinoids or acids at night — the calm it provides in the morning is what makes an assertive evening regimen sustainable.

Consider it also during recovery: after a procedure, after sun exposure, after a period of over-exfoliation, when the priority is to stop provoking the skin and let it rebuild.

The most consequential step in a routine is the one most people rush. A cleanser cannot make skin beautiful — but it can absolutely undo everything that follows.

The squeaky-clean myth

That tight, squeaky feeling after washing has been sold for decades as proof of efficacy. It is the opposite. It is the sensation of a stripped acid mantle — the thin, slightly acidic film of sebum, sweat, fatty acids and microbiota that sits on the surface of healthy skin at around pH 4.7 to 5.5.

Harsh surfactants and high-pH soaps remove that film along with the day's grime. The skin then spends hours rebuilding it, during which it is more permeable, more reactive and more prone to transepidermal water loss. Oily skin often responds by overproducing sebum; dry skin simply gets drier. Both outcomes are frequently misread as evidence that a stronger cleanser is needed.

What the botanicals do

Blackberry — Rubus fruticosus — is dense in anthocyanins, ellagic acid and vitamin C. Anthocyanins are the pigments that give the fruit its colour and are potent free-radical scavengers; ellagic acid has been studied for its role in limiting collagen breakdown after ultraviolet exposure. In a cleanser these provide antioxidant support at the very moment the skin surface is most exposed.

Aloe barbadensis supplies polysaccharides that hold water at the surface and calm mechanical irritation from washing. It is the reason a well-built gel cleanser can leave skin feeling supple rather than bare.

Salvia officinalis — sage — brings rosmarinic acid, an antioxidant with genuine anti-inflammatory activity, alongside mild antimicrobial action useful for congestion-prone skin.

Arctium lappa — burdock root — has a long history in traditional practice for troubled skin, and contributes inulin and polyphenols that support a calmer, more balanced surface.

How to actually wash your face

Use lukewarm water. Hot water strips lipids and provokes flushing; cold water does not adequately dissolve sebum.

Emulsify the cleanser in wet hands first, then work it over the face for a full sixty seconds. Contact time is what allows a gentle surfactant to do its work — most people cleanse for under fifteen seconds and then blame the product.

Rinse thoroughly, especially along the jaw and hairline, where residue collects and causes congestion. Pat dry with a clean towel; do not rub.

Then apply the next step while the skin is still slightly damp. Humectants draw from available moisture, and a damp surface makes the serum that follows measurably more effective.

Morning and evening are different problems

In the evening, you are removing sunscreen, makeup, pollution and a day of sebum. If you wear a long-wear base or a mineral sunscreen, a first cleanse with a balm or oil followed by the gel is not indulgence; it is what makes a single gentle cleanse sufficient.

In the morning, the skin is carrying only what your own body produced overnight and the residue of your night cream. A brief, gentle cleanse is enough. Repeating the full evening protocol at seven in the morning is how most people end up with a compromised barrier by Thursday.

Almost every complaint people bring to skincare — tightness, stinging, redness, dullness, unpredictable breakouts — traces back to one structure. Here is how it works, and how to rebuild it.

Bricks and mortar

The outermost layer of skin, the stratum corneum, is often described as brick-and-mortar. The bricks are corneocytes: flattened, protein-filled cells with no nucleus, the final form of a keratinocyte's life. The mortar is a lipid matrix that fills every space between them.

That mortar is what keeps water in and irritants, allergens and microbes out. It is composed of roughly fifty percent ceramides, twenty-five percent cholesterol and fifteen percent free fatty acids — a ratio the skin maintains deliberately, because the lipids self-assemble into ordered lamellar sheets only at approximately those proportions.

Ceramides are therefore not one ingredient among many. They are the structural majority of the thing that makes skin a barrier at all.

What depletes them

Age is the largest factor: ceramide content in the stratum corneum declines measurably from the thirties onward, and drops more sharply around menopause as oestrogen falls. Winter air, low humidity and indoor heating accelerate loss. So do hot water, high-pH cleansers, and enthusiastic exfoliation.

The signs are consistent and easy to read: tightness after washing, stinging from products that were previously comfortable, flaking that persists through moisturiser, dullness from disordered surface reflection, and redness that lingers. Skin that reacts to everything is not usually sensitive by nature — it is usually barrier-compromised.

Why night is the right time

Barrier repair follows a circadian rhythm. Transepidermal water loss peaks in the late evening and overnight, and the enzymes that synthesise barrier lipids are most active during that window. Keratinocyte proliferation also rises at night.

Skin is, in other words, doing its structural work while you sleep. An evening formula that supplies ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids in physiological ratio arrives with the raw material at precisely the moment it can be used.

The corollary is that a night cream should be richer than a day cream, and for a different reason than comfort. There is no sun protection to sit under, no makeup to accommodate, and the occlusive film that would feel heavy at noon is exactly what limits overnight water loss.

Building the evening ritual

Cleanse gently. Apply treatment — peptides, or a retinoid if you use one — to slightly damp skin. Then seal with a ceramide-rich cream as the final step, taking it down the neck and across the décolleté, where the skin is thin and routinely neglected.

Warm the cream between the palms and press it in rather than rubbing. Pressing distributes an occlusive film evenly; rubbing thins it and stimulates unnecessary flushing.

If your barrier is currently compromised, pause the actives entirely. Cleanse, apply a ceramide cream, and do nothing else for two weeks. The barrier's own recovery cycle is roughly two to four weeks, and it will not repair while you continue to challenge it. Almost nobody does this, and it is almost always what works.
